The Spruce Goose

Today November 2nd, 2017 I spent the morning helping set up for the 32nd Annual London Bridge Seaplane Classic at Windsor beach in Lake Havasu City, AZ. It’s a fun event put on each year by the Desert Hawks RC Club which focuses on yes, you guessed it seaplanes.

Once I returned home and had a bite to eat I sat down at my computer and opened up my email to find an email from The History Channels newsletter called “This Day in History” and the title of the lead story and the picture associated with it really caught my eye.

There it was right in front of me the worlds LARGEST ever aircraft and yes it’s a seaplane or flying boat. I think most of you reading this post know the story of Howard Hughes and Hughes Aircraft Company, in any case, if you’d like to the read the full story and watch the video about this and other events that took place this day in history you can click on the image above which will open in a new window (sorry about the ad in the video, but hey it’s really short).

As mentioned in the story on the history channel the Spruce Goose is now housed at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. You can visit their website “Here” and if you ever get the chance to visit the museum itself I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. I’ve visited it twice myself and am planning another visit this coming summer. For now, you may find this video tour on YouTube interesting.

At this point, you might ask, “Is there an RC model of the Spruce Goose”? And of course, the answer is yes. Below is a video of one such model.

The Futaba F-66 Radio Control

The model in the video below uses a 45-year-old radio control system (Futaba F-66) that only controls the rudder using a rubber band powered clockwork mechanism. The radio has one button which you press in the correct sequence to get right, left, or neutral rudder. If you listen closely you can hear the escapement unwinding every time the control button is pressed. The model has a 36″ span and is powered by a Cox .020 engine.

This is the first in a series of articles focused on the history of Radio Control Modeling.

DesertHawksRC in the News

 

Earlier this week Chelsea Curtis from Today News-Herald came out to the Desert Hawks RC Club Complex looking for an interview. Everyone was at the race tracks so when she showed up we were on hand to greet her.

She interviewed Ed Heil and Jason Collins at the RC Short Course track. As you can see we made the front page on Sundays paper. 

 

She wrote a really nice article and I will try to get permission to copy it to our website.

 

 

 

Track Committee Update

Construction of the RC Short Course has been completed. The track is not officially open, we are still in process of cleaning up and doing final adjustments. The official opening will be after the General Membership Meeting on Saturday, September 9th.

With Club permission, the Track Committee would like to hold an Open House on Sunday, September 24, 2017. The purpose of the Open House will be to invite the Lake Havasu Community to see our facility. Pilots will be invited to fly with an assigned Club Member Spotter, Drivers will be encouraged to run their cars on either tracks. Membership forms for the club and AMA will be on hand. With participation from club members, we would like to have a flying demonstration from Noon till 1 PM.

A special Thank You goes out to Hot Rocks Hobbies and Lowes for donating material for the track. Special Thank You also goes to our neighbors at the MotoCross track for use of their labor and tractor and to Lowery’s Truck Repair (they service all types of vehicles) for building the Drivers Stand. This project could not have been completed without the support of Dub and Chip Campbell and Pioneer Earth Movers.

Note:  No Club funds were used in the construction of the Short Course or the resurfacing of the Oval Track. A total of $2,500 was raised from the following club members: Tim Price, Phil Hatch Sr (Good Phil), Phil Hatch Jr (Bad Phil), John Warren, and Ed Heil.

Construction of the RC Short Course is well underway. Thanks to donations from several of our club members and support from Pioneer Earth Movers the new RC Short Course Track is nearing completion. The planned Grand Opening is scheduled for September 3,
